Portland’s Holiday Tree: A Look Back at Its Festive Arrival

The annual lighting of the holiday tree in Portland’s Monument Square marks the start of the festive season, but the journey of this iconic tree has a rich history that spans several decades. Each year, a local family donates the tree, which becomes a focal point for celebrations in downtown Portland.

Documenting the Tradition

Over the years, the arrival of the holiday tree has been captured in numerous photographs, highlighting both the tree’s significance and the community spirit surrounding it. One notable image from November 21, 1978, showcases a 50-foot blue spruce donated by Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jewett of South Portland. This striking tree became a cherished symbol of the holiday season, making its debut in a city-wide celebration.

Fast forward to November 19, 1991, when the forestry department’s Jim Hodgdon was seen riding down Congress Street, guiding the 55-foot tree cut from the front lawn of donors Sam and Jacquelyn Aceto. The image captures the excitement of the occasion, as the tree made its way to the square, ready to be adorned with lights.

Another memorable moment occurred on November 17, 1999, when a festive character known as Jack Frost led a truck carrying the holiday tree. This particular tree was sourced from the home of Peter and Suzanne Martel on Holm Avenue in Portland. The image reflects the whimsical spirit of the season, drawing attention to the community’s involvement in this annual event.

Recent Arrivals and Community Engagement

The tradition continued on November 15, 2000, when a freshly cut evergreen from Forest Street in Westbrook made its slow journey down Congress Street. Each of these trees has not only added beauty to the square but has also fostered a sense of togetherness among residents.

For those unable to visit in person, a live camera stream, known as the Monument Square Tree Cam, is accessible on YouTube until January 1. This feature allows people to enjoy the tree’s presence throughout the holiday season, reinforcing its role as a centerpiece for community gatherings.

As the holidays approach, the arrival of the tree serves as a reminder of Portland’s enduring traditions and the generous spirit of its residents. Each year, the tree stands tall in Monument Square, embodying the joy and warmth of the season for all who gather to celebrate.
