Two teenagers from the North Okanagan region, Caden O’Dwyer and Jillian Donald, are competing for the prestigious title of Youth Athlete of the Year. Both athletes have successfully advanced to the next round of the online contest, which recognizes outstanding young talent in sports.
O’Dwyer, a football player at Clarence Fulton Secondary School, currently leads his group in votes, while Donald, a blackbelt at Sundance Taekwon-do in Vernon, holds second place in hers. The contest winner will receive $25,000 and will be featured in an advertisement for Sports Illustrated.
The competition is gaining momentum, with the athletes relying on community support to secure their places in the next round. O’Dwyer expressed his passion for sports, stating, “I love the hustle, improvement, understanding, and intensity. Absolutely love the loud crowds, touchdowns, brotherhood, and teamwork.” He credits his father as his biggest inspiration, noting that his guidance has shaped his character both on and off the field.
“My dad pushed me beyond myself to be who he always knew I could be,” O’Dwyer said. “He raised my expectations and believed in me. He taught me not to quit and how to handle defeat. We work out together, and he has been my coach on and off the field.”
Donald’s journey is equally inspiring. Diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of six, she is set to represent Team Canada at the International Taekwon-do Federation World Championships in Croatia from October 7 to 11. Her proudest moment came when she earned her first-degree blackbelt in March. Following this achievement, she competed in the national championships, securing a national champion title and qualifying for the national team selections.
“I made Team Canada just two months after my blackbelt test, while living with type one diabetes,” Donald shared. “It has been a challenging but rewarding journey.”
Community members are encouraged to support both athletes by voting for them online. Each vote brings them closer to the opportunity to be recognized as Youth Athlete of the Year.
