News4JAX partnered with the United Way of Northeast Florida on January 16, 2023, for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which engaged over 550 volunteers in community enhancement projects across Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties. This event, held at various locations including Bethel Church in North Riverside, aimed to honor Dr. King’s legacy through acts of service that fostered unity and community spirit.
At Bethel Church, volunteers of all ages participated in numerous outreach initiatives. Melanie Patz, president and CEO of the United Way of Northeast Florida, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that it embodied the spirit of cooperation and community involvement. The gathering featured not only volunteer work but also musical performances, including renditions of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “This Little Light of Mine,” which added a celebratory atmosphere to the day’s activities.
Volunteers engaged in a variety of service tasks, such as mulching, pressure washing, painting, and clearing leaves at multiple sites. At one location in North Riverside, volunteer Allante Laster expressed her enthusiasm for participating in hands-on work for the first time. “You get out of community what you put into it,” Laster remarked, reflecting on the importance of building relationships through community service.
Erica La Spada, director of volunteer and community engagement for the United Way of Northeast Florida, noted that such events serve to uplift the community and promote the ideals of unity that Dr. King championed. “The work we do today is a testament to our commitment to making a difference in the lives of others,” she said.
The MLK Day of Service is part of a broader commitment to community engagement in Jacksonville. The event not only provides vital assistance to local neighborhoods but also instills a sense of purpose and connection among participants. As volunteers rolled up their sleeves and tackled various tasks, they contributed to the betterment of their community while honoring the enduring legacy of Dr. King.
This year’s initiative underscored the ongoing need for community involvement and the positive impact of collective action. The success of the event serves as a reminder of the power of volunteerism in fostering a spirit of cooperation and service in society.
