Dozens of businesses in Newark have come together to support cancer research by participating in the Turn Newark Pink campaign, which encourages shops to decorate their fronts in vibrant shades of pink. This initiative, organized by the Newark committee of Cancer Research UK, aims to raise both awareness and funds for crucial research into cancer treatment and prevention. The campaign began on September 29 and is set to conclude on October 11, 2023.
As part of the Turn Newark Pink campaign, local businesses transformed their shop fronts into imaginative displays, showcasing a variety of pink-themed decorations. Among the many participants, the committee selected Furniture Warehouse, located on Kirkgate, as the standout display. The shop’s window was creatively designed by owner Paula Wood and her assistant Muzellie Carlisle.
Muzellie shared, “We wanted to do something a little bit different and support an amazing charity at the same time. We got all the pink stuff we could find, popped it in the window with some blooms, and did our best. It was good fun. We have had quite a few people saying it looks good, and we love doing things like this.”
Celebrating Community Spirit and Creativity
At a recent award ceremony, Roger Pykett, chairman of the Newark Cancer Research UK committee, presented the 2025 trophy to Furniture Warehouse. Pykett praised the shop’s display for its “panoramic design,” noting the originality and quality that set it apart from other entries. “There have been some marvellous displays in the town,” he remarked, “but this one struck me and the other judges as being very original and high quality. It is a nice, big display, which used items from the shop and depicts everything we wanted to present as Cancer Research.”
Pykett also expressed gratitude to all participating businesses and the Newark Town Council for their support. He emphasized the campaign’s community impact, stating, “This was taken up by everyone in the town. It really highlights the strong community spirit we have. Cancer is something which has touched so many people, in so many ways. A massive thank you to everyone that took part in raising money and awareness.”
Fundraising Goals and Community Impact
The Turn Newark Pink campaign has a fundraising target of £5,000, and as of the latest updates, the committee is approximately halfway toward reaching that goal. This year’s campaign marks a significant milestone, as the Newark committee has now raised over £1 million since its inception in 1968.
The statistics around cancer are sobering, with estimates suggesting that 1 in 2 people will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lives. This reality underscores the importance of initiatives like Turn Newark Pink, which not only raise vital funds but also promote greater understanding of the disease and the ongoing need for research.
As the campaign draws to a close, the vibrant displays around Newark serve as a powerful reminder of the community’s commitment to fighting cancer and supporting those affected by it.
