Nashville’s Pancho and Lefty’s Cantina Receives Low Health Score

A routine inspection conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health on August 13, 2025, revealed significant health code violations at Pancho and Lefty’s Cantina, a Mexican restaurant located at 2600 8th Ave S, Nashville, TN. The establishment received an unsatisfactory score of 77, highlighting several issues related to food safety and sanitation that must be rectified.

During the inspection, inspectors documented multiple violations that raised concerns about the restaurant’s adherence to health regulations. Among the most serious findings were two severely dented cans of pinto beans found on the good can rack. Additionally, the three-compartment sink was inspected and discovered to have an empty sanitizer jug, with the necessary chlorine test strips unavailable at the time.

Concerns continued with the handling of raw chicken, which was kept at 46°F for two hours, exceeding the safe storage temperature of 41°F or below. The prep cooler, without a lid and located near fryers and grills, recorded temperatures between 45°F and 48°F. Furthermore, inspectors noted the use of single-use condiment cups for scooping salsa and cream sauce, which is against food safety guidelines.

Sanitation Issues Identified

The sanitation conditions in the kitchen also drew criticism. Inspectors observed considerable discoloration and grooving on the cutting board surfaces, along with excessive grease and food debris accumulation on fryers, grills, and cooler equipment. The warming cabinet drawers intended for tortilla chips exhibited significant oil and grease buildup, compromising food safety.

In addition to these issues, the can opener on the prep table showed excessive food residue, while the cook line’s wall tiles were found to be dirty with discolored grout lines. Alarmingly, a rainwater leak was noted entering the dry storage area in the basement, further highlighting the establishment’s sanitation challenges.

Management at Pancho and Lefty’s Cantina is now required to address these violations within ten days to avoid potential permit suspension during the follow-up inspection. They have the right to request a hearing regarding the inspection report within the same timeframe.

Prompt action to correct these violations is crucial for maintaining the restaurant’s compliance with health standards and ensuring the safety of its patrons. The outcome of the follow-up inspection will be closely monitored, as it will determine the future operational status of this Nashville establishment.
