On July 30, 2025, Namahana School officially opened its doors to its inaugural class at the former Kula School campus on the North Shore. This institution marks a significant milestone as the first middle and high school in the area. Bridget Thorpe, the school’s principal, expressed her enthusiasm for welcoming the first group of students.
Community Events Highlight Back-to-School Excitement
The opening day festivities will include visits from the Namahana School administrative team and esteemed guests, who will tour the school’s permanent site located directly across from the Gather Federal Credit Union, Kilauea Branch. This event symbolizes a new beginning for education on the North Shore and is expected to foster community involvement.
In conjunction with the school opening, the Grove Farm Company is hosting its weekly market at Puhi Park on Saturday, featuring nearly 40 vendors. Marlene Duarte from the company noted that the market will include a craft fair component, making it an attractive spot for families and individuals in the community.
A highlight of the market will be the return of Ferdinand Dosono from the Kauai Kim Chee ohana, who is anticipated to showcase their popular products after a successful appearance at the Koloa Plantation Days celebration. The market is a vital part of the community’s social fabric, offering local artisans a platform to sell their goods.
Support for Back-to-School Initiatives
As the market concludes, Hale Opio will kick off its End of Summer Bash, featuring backpack and keiki registration. The event is set to start at 15:00 and aims to distribute over 250 backpacks filled with essential school supplies, already signed up by families in need. Activities for children and a variety of vendors will also be available, creating a festive atmosphere.
In a related initiative, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz announced a new resource aimed at assisting residents affected by cuts in health care coverage through Med-Quest, as well as changes in food assistance programs and education. The website, www.schatz.senate.gov/taxlawhelp, provides a question-and-answer guide that clarifies the timelines and impacts of these changes, addressing concerns that have previously been unclear.
The opening of Namahana School and the surrounding community events reflect a commitment to educational growth and support for families on the North Shore. As the school year begins, the community looks forward to the positive impact these initiatives will have on local students.
