Mount Vernon Outland Airport has been officially chosen as the Terminus host site for the 2026 Air Race Classic, a significant event set to take place from June 25 to June 29, 2026. This decision is seen as a major boost for local tourism and community engagement, marking the first time the airport has served as a Terminus for this prestigious race.
The Air Race Classic, an all-female piloted cross-country air race, has roots dating back to the 1929 Women’s Air Derby. The event challenges teams to navigate a multi-day route across the United States, focusing on accuracy, flight planning, and consistency rather than pure speed. This year, the race will conclude at Mount Vernon, drawing pilots, crews, and aviation enthusiasts from across the nation.
Community Impact and Celebration
Local officials are enthusiastic about the positive implications this event will have on the Mount Vernon community. “Being selected as the Terminus for the Air Race Classic is a tremendous honor for Mount Vernon Outland Airport,” said Chris Collins, Airport Manager. “This event puts our airport on a national stage and highlights the professionalism of our facilities and staff.”
Participants and officials will engage in a variety of community activities and events during their stay. Sheila Jolly-Scrivner, Host City Terminus Chair, noted, “This is truly a community-wide opportunity. From aviation enthusiasts to families and local businesses, the Air Race Classic offers something for everyone.”
On June 27, 2026, the airport will host a public aviation celebration and youth activity day, featuring Young Eagle Flights for children, interactive aviation displays, and educational opportunities aimed at inspiring the next generation of pilots. This family-friendly programming is designed to foster interest in aviation among youth.
Sponsorship Opportunities and Economic Boost
To support the 2026 Air Race Classic and associated activities, event organizers are actively seeking sponsorship from local, regional, and national businesses. Sponsorship opportunities provide high visibility and community engagement, aligning sponsors with a respected aviation event that promotes education and opportunities for women pilots.
According to Angela Schrum, Mount Vernon Tourism Director, the event is expected to have a significant positive impact on local tourism and the economy. “We’re excited to welcome racers and visitors from across the country and to highlight everything Mount Vernon has to offer while celebrating a truly historic aviation event,” she stated.
As planning continues, additional details, schedules, and sponsorship information will be released. The Air Race Classic serves as a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and educating women pilots while increasing public awareness of general aviation.
