Brandon Bailey, a fifth-grade teacher at Forest View Elementary in Cadillac, Michigan, has received the prestigious Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award. This accolade recognizes his innovative teaching methods and strong rapport with students, along with a cash prize of $2,000. His achievement also qualifies him for the $10,000 Educator of the Year award, which will be awarded at the end of the academic year.
Bailey, who has dedicated 21 years to education, has spent the last eight years at Forest View Elementary. He attributes his passion for teaching to a hands-on instructional approach that fosters a love of learning among his students. “I love to teach. I am passionate about it. I found it to be very rewarding to pass on the love of learning to someone else,” Bailey explained. He emphasizes the importance of engaging students directly in their learning processes, stating, “When the student is involved, they learn.”
Community Recognition and Support
His nomination came from Heidi Collins, a parent of a former student, who highlighted Bailey’s ability to build trust and support students both academically and emotionally. “Mr. Bailey, without a doubt, goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character, social skills, and emotional development,” Collins remarked.
Bailey found Collins’ nomination particularly touching, as it reflected the bond he developed with her son, who joined his class later in the school year. The two connected over shared interests, such as fishing and hockey, which facilitated a meaningful relationship despite the late enrollment.
Forest View Elementary Principal Jake Wing praised Bailey’s commitment to education, asserting that this award shines a light on the often unnoticed daily efforts of teachers. “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see,” Wing noted. “So it’s nice for him to get this recognition.”
Impact on Student Achievement
Cadillac Area Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Brown emphasized the significant impact Bailey has on student success and classroom culture. She stated, “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental. It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work, intentional planning, and a relentless focus on rigorous learning.” Brown added that Bailey’s dedication contributes not only to Forest View Elementary but also strengthens the entire district.
Bailey holds a bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also coaches the high school girls’ golf team. The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to honor outstanding public school educators across the state. Nominees are evaluated based on criteria that includes excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement.
