Michael McIlheran Marks Fifth Year as Certified Funeral Service Professional

Michael McIlheran, a licensed funeral director at Haut Funeral Home in Jamestown, North Dakota, has successfully completed his fifth year as a Certified Funeral Service Professional (CFSP) through the Academy of Professional Service Practice Inc. This achievement places him among an elite group, as he is one of only five funeral directors in North Dakota to hold this prestigious certification.

To earn this designation, McIlheran underwent a rigorous process that included completing 180 hours of continuing education. Following this initial requirement, he has committed to an additional 20 hours of continuing education annually. Notably, North Dakota laws do not mandate continuing education for funeral directors, making McIlheran’s commitment to his professional development particularly significant.

Commitment to Excellence in Funeral Service

In addition to his CFSP certification, McIlheran is a certified crematory operator recognized by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). He further enhanced his expertise by completing the NFDA Advanced Embalming and Restoration course at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where he was selected as one of just 50 participants from across the country each year.

McIlheran’s educational background is extensive. He graduated with a Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Nebraska and holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology/pre-medicine from Simpson College in Iowa. He completed his mortuary science studies at Des Moines Area Community College, demonstrating his dedication to the field.

Furthermore, he is certified as a Medico-Legal Death Scene Investigator through the University of North Dakota, showcasing his diverse skill set in handling complex situations. In addition to his professional roles, McIlheran serves as a rostered Lutheran pastor, integrating his spiritual guidance into his work.

Career Journey and Community Impact

Residing in Jamestown, McIlheran has been with Haut Funeral Home since November 2024. Before his current role, he gained valuable experience at the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has served as a funeral director in Minnesota. His diverse experiences have equipped him with a unique perspective on the funeral service profession.

McIlheran’s achievements and ongoing commitment to education reflect a broader trend in the funeral service industry, where professionals are increasingly pursuing certifications and advanced training to better serve their communities. His dedication not only enhances his skills but also provides families with the highest level of care during difficult times.

As the funeral service landscape continues to evolve, McIlheran stands out as a leader committed to excellence and professional growth, setting a high standard for his peers in North Dakota and beyond.
