The Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) hosted a successful memorial archery shoot on October 14, 2025, at the **Wilkes-Barre Rifle and Pistol Club** in **Hunlock Creek**. This event, named after former YHEC member **Justin Frederick**, aimed to honor his legacy while promoting archery and outdoor activities among local youths.
Participants engaged in shooting at **30 3-D archery targets**, set at varying distances and difficulties. This setup not only allowed archers to improve their skills but also provided a fun environment for community members to come together and celebrate Frederick’s love for the outdoors. **Amy Shingler**, co-coordinator of the YHEC team, expressed excitement about the turnout, stating, “We are thrilled to see the community come out to honor Justin and support our area youths.”
Shingler noted that the event attracted approximately **150 archers**, and plans are already in motion to host the memorial shoot again in **2026**. Proceeds from the event will benefit the local YHEC program, ensuring its continuation and growth for future generations.
The YHEC program, developed by the **National Rifle Association (NRA)**, is designed for youths aged **10 to 18**. It provides a comprehensive curriculum covering safe hunting practices, laws and ethics, and skills such as map reading and wildlife identification. Participants learn to shoot various firearms, including bows, .22 rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders, all while receiving tailored instruction based on their age and experience.
**Jeremy Shingler**, also a co-coordinator, emphasized the program’s accessibility, noting that there is no cost for boys or girls to join. He highlighted the importance of the program in fostering a passion for the outdoors among young people. “It’s a multi-disciplinary program ideal for children who love nature,” he remarked.
The YHEC operates from **January to June**, with sessions held twice a week, each lasting two hours. In addition to regular practice, participants have the opportunity to compete in shooting competitions during the spring.
Founded in **1985** at Remington Farms in Chestertown, Maryland, the YHEC has engaged over **1.2 million** youths across the United States. The program continues to inspire a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts, instilling a sense of responsibility and respect for nature.
Local children interested in joining the YHEC program can contact Amy or Jeremy Shingler at **570-498-9986** or via email at **[email protected]** for more information. The program remains a vital resource for instilling outdoor skills and values in young people, making a lasting impact on their lives.
