In a poignant journey from trauma to healing, local author **Kimberly Souba** is using her experiences of childhood abuse to inspire and support other young victims. Growing up in **LaMoille, Illinois**, in the 1980s, Kimberly faced significant challenges, becoming one of the approximately **40 percent of children** in the United States who have experienced sexual abuse. Her story, while not unique, is marked by her remarkable resilience and commitment to helping others.
Kimberly’s recovery has been described as “courageous” by **Dan Wujek**, a father figure in her life. He emphasized her mission to ensure that other children understand their worth and that they are loved. **Janean Doherty**, a close friend and former babysitter, reflected on Kimberly’s journey, stating that her ability to overcome adversity is a testament to her strength. “She has saved many other children from these situations,” Janean noted, acknowledging Kimberly’s unique insight into the effects of abuse.
Though Kimberly recently relocated to **Fargo, North Dakota**, she has begun to share her story publicly after years of silence. With the support of therapist **Mary Ann Akers**, who worked with her for a decade, Kimberly slowly opened up about her traumatic experiences. “For six months, I sat there and never said a word,” Kimberly recalled. It was only after developing a trusting relationship with Akers that she began to confront her past.
A Journey of Healing and Faith
Throughout her life, Kimberly has encountered numerous mentors, including **Fr. Charles Klamut**, a priest from the **Diocese of Peoria**. Their collaboration began when Kimberly worked as a religious education director at his parish. “She’s bold, she does the work, does the digging, and she’s not afraid to wrestle with God and herself to get the healing and renewal she needs,” Fr. Charles remarked. Their ongoing friendship, despite geographical distance, continues to be a source of encouragement for Kimberly.
In her efforts to help others, Kimberly has turned to writing children’s books that focus on themes of love and resilience. Her first book, **“A Caterpillar’s Journey,”** is a reflection of her life and transformation. Additionally, she is set to release **“Mary, Dinosaurs and the Wonders of God: A Backyard Adventure with Momma Mary”** just in time for Christmas, inspired by her godchildren. Another title, **“Miriam’s Heavenly Tea Party,”** will feature beloved saints and is scheduled for release on **November 1**.
Kimberly attributes much of her healing to her faith, which she describes as the anchor throughout her tumultuous journey. After her formative years in LaMoille, she was raised by her grandmother following a turbulent childhood marked by her mother’s struggles with addiction. As a teenager, she discovered a vibrant Christian community through the **Teens Encounter Christ (TEC)** ministry, which played a crucial role in her spiritual development.
Despite her challenges, Kimberly persisted, ultimately navigating a path that included three suicide attempts. “During those times, when I was depressed, I started journaling,” she explained. This practice became a lifeline during the COVID-19 pandemic when she revisited her writings, leading her to create poetry to share with loved ones.
New Beginnings in North Dakota
Earlier this year, Kimberly secured a position as a communications specialist with the **North Dakota University System**, where she has found fulfillment in her work. Her recent return to Fargo also allowed her to reconnect with her faith community at **Sts. Anne and Joachim Church**, where she continues to nurture her spiritual life.
Through her journey, Kimberly has maintained strong connections with friends from Illinois, including Dan Wujek, who has witnessed the profound impact of community support on her healing. “Watching the Christian community open their hearts to Kimberly was beautiful,” he shared.
As Kimberly embarks on this next chapter, her dedication to helping others through her writing and personal story remains unwavering. Her mission to empower children who have faced adversity is a testament to her resilience, faith, and the belief that healing is possible.
