The Royals Tea Party at Lathrop High School on Saturday provided a delightful afternoon for young attendees and their families, raising funds for the choirs of Lathrop and West Valley High Schools. The event, characterized by its enchanting atmosphere, may soon become a cherished annual gathering, given the enthusiastic turnout and enjoyment expressed by families.
Set outside the Hering Auditorium, the tea party transformed the area into a whimsical realm where children arrived dressed as their favorite princes and princesses. Attendees enjoyed tea and an array of sweets while engaging in storytelling sessions led by characters from Disney’s beloved tales. The highlight of the afternoon included performances by the cast of the upcoming production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” who not only entertained but also encouraged children to join in singing and dancing.
Activities included royal face painting and a tiara-making table, further immersing the children in the fairy tale experience. Young Oakleigh, aged four, was particularly taken with Rapunzel’s long braid, helping to keep it from trailing on the ground as she joined in the festivities. The cast members, filled with energy and enthusiasm, spontaneously united to sing, attracting children who eagerly held hands and participated in the joyous atmosphere.
Gwendolyn Brazier, choir director for both Lathrop and West Valley High Schools, expressed her excitement about the event and the upcoming musical. “We really wanted to do a family show,” she stated, emphasizing that no other family-friendly musical was being performed in the area this year. The choice of “The Little Mermaid” allowed for numerous roles for children, facilitating their involvement in the production. “It was a way for us to get a lot of younger singers involved, some who maybe have never done a show,” she added.
The cast has been deeply involved in every aspect of the production, from painting sets to collaborating with local organizations such as Fairbanks Light Opera Theatre and Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre for props. The rapid progress of the production has been impressive, with Brazier noting, “It’s all come together pretty quickly.”
During the upcoming performances, scheduled from January 22 to January 31, 2024, the Saturday shows will include costume contests for young attendees, who revel in the opportunity to dress up. An estimated 50 families attended the tea party, and feedback from parents highlighted the cast’s supportive nature. One parent remarked, “Your kids are so good. They are very involved.”
Brazier expressed pride in her students, stating, “I’m so proud of them. They are good humans.” The performances of “The Little Mermaid” will take place at 6 p.m. on January 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and 31, with matinee shows at 1 p.m. on January 24 and 31. Tickets are available for $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and military members, $12 for K-12 students, and free for children under five years old.
This joyful event not only created cherished memories for the children involved but also strengthened community ties through shared experiences and support for the arts.
