On March 30, 2024, the Kiwanis Club of Tryon hosted its annual Pancake Breakfast at St. Luke’s Plaza, successfully bringing together community members for a morning of food and fellowship. Originally scheduled for the previous weekend, the event had been postponed due to inclement weather. Attendees enjoyed a selection of pancakes—both regular and gluten-free—served alongside bacon, sausage, cooked apples, maple syrup, and various beverages.
The outdoor gathering not only provided a delicious meal but also served a noble purpose by raising scholarship funds for students at Polk County High School and Early College. Each year, the Kiwanis Club awards between $4,000 and $5,000 in college scholarships to Key Club members who demonstrate outstanding community service.
Many volunteers from the Kiwanis Club and Key Club participated in the breakfast, showcasing a strong tradition of community service. Key Club member Lucas Johnson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I enjoy the opportunity to meet and help members of the community, and Key Club is a great way to do that.” His fellow member, Kenzie Davis, echoed this sentiment, adding, “I love getting out in the community, helping, and seeing all the wonderful smiles on people’s faces.”
Honoring Community Leaders
The breakfast also featured distinguished guests, including Jon Hethcox, Carolinas District Governor; Jennifer Hethcox, Carolinas District Circle K Administrator; and Dawn Puderbaugh Hodges, Kiwanis International Trustee. A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Legion of Honor award to Bob Scruggs, recognizing his remarkable fifty years of service with the Kiwanis Club of Tryon. Due to health challenges that required kidney dialysis, Scruggs had been unable to attend club meetings over the past year, making this tribute particularly poignant for those present.
The club extended its gratitude to local businesses such as the Tryon Coffeehouse, Trade St. Diner, and Throwbax Grille for their support in providing kitchen and seating facilities for the breakfast. This event is held biannually, further solidifying its status as a cherished community tradition.
The Kiwanis Club of Tryon holds its regular meetings every Wednesday at noon at the Tryon Depot, continuing its commitment to community service and engagement.
