Keep Morristown-Hamblen Beautiful (KMHB) has appointed Karen Ward as its interim executive director, a role she accepted on June 10. Ward brings extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, having previously served as the executive director at ALPS Adult Day Services and worked with various organizations, including the Lakeway Achievement Center. Her return to the nonprofit sector is marked by a new community-focused model aimed at enhancing local environmental initiatives.
Ward’s immediate priorities include addressing litter prevention and community education surrounding recycling and stormwater management. She noted, “I’ve really enjoyed learning more details about the organization and its role in the community.” Her proactive approach has already demonstrated tangible results; she recently completed a month-end report ahead of schedule, earning praise from the KMHB board of directors.
Community Engagement and Educational Initiatives
Ward has quickly immersed herself in KMHB’s public outreach, setting up an informational booth at the MATS Fun Day event at the Morristown Farmers Market. Joined by KMHB volunteers, she emphasized the agency’s dual mission of education and action, which includes organizing cleanups and providing recycling receptacles at community events. “The board members are amazing,” she remarked, acknowledging their dedication and support.
One of Ward’s significant initiatives involved a presentation at Girls Inc. of Hamblen County, where she discussed the impacts of litter and pollution on local waterways. Accompanied by her educational mascot, Freddi the Fish, she reinforced the message, “only rain down the storm drain.” Ward aims to expand these educational efforts to local schools and organizations, particularly targeting children to foster long-term environmental stewardship.
Upcoming Events and Future Goals
KMHB plans to maintain a strong presence in the community with several upcoming events. On August 23, the agency will participate in a cleanup at Merchants Greene. Additionally, the annual BOPAE collection event is scheduled for October, allowing residents to safely dispose of hazardous materials such as batteries, oil, and electronic waste. This event is part of the larger Keep America Beautiful initiative known as the “Great American Cleanup,” and Ward noted significant interest from the public, with many already inquiring about participation.
In November, KMHB will host a tire collection event at the Hamblen County / Morristown City Landfill, further reinforcing its commitment to responsible waste management. For more information on these initiatives, interested individuals can contact Karen Ward at 423-586-6442 or via email at [email protected].
Ward’s interim position at KMHB is not just a placeholder; she is committed to the agency’s mission of litter prevention, beautification, and community education until a permanent executive director is appointed. As she stated, “I will be here until a permanent director is found.” KMHB, a licensed 501(C)(3)1985 and relies on funding from the State Litter Grant Program, local government contributions, and community support.
