James L. Bauer, an esteemed engineer and author, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on September 26, 2025, at his home in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. Born in Centralia, Illinois, he was the son of the late James E. Bauer and Glenda M. Stein Bauer. His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, touching the lives of many through his diverse interests and contributions to the community.
Following his graduation from Interboro High School, Jim served in the US Navy, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. He later graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering and obtained a master’s degree in management systems from the University of Iowa. His professional journey included significant roles at major companies such as Corning Glass, Sylvania, and Collins Radio, ultimately culminating in his position at Fisher Controls, a division of Emerson, in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Bauer’s expertise in engineering earned him several professional certifications, including Licensed Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Engineer. He was also a Certified Production and Inventory Management Fellow and held certification from the Association for Supply Chain Management. His commitment to intellectual growth was evident through his memberships in the high IQ societies MENSA and Intertel.
A Passion for Education and Writing
Jim was not only dedicated to his profession but also to environmental efforts and education. He planted over 20,000 trees on his property to enhance its resemblance to the natural beauty of Pennsylvania. His passion for history, particularly concerning World War II in the Pacific, inspired him to write a book titled Fletcher, Task Force Commander: The Early Years of the Pacific War, which is available on Amazon. This work reflects his fascination with Admiral Fletcher, a key figure in the Pacific theater, who hails from Marshalltown.
Recognizing the importance of language education, Bauer established and directed the Basic English Institute, focusing on the application of Charles Ogden’s 850 basic English words. He also developed a website designed to provide resources for educators, further demonstrating his commitment to learning and teaching.
Family and Community Impact
James L. Bauer is survived by his daughter, Fabienne R. Childs, and her husband, Craig, as well as his sister, Peggy L. Glaser, Ph.D.. His family plans to hold private services to honor his memory.
