The Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee crowned its champion on March 2, 2024, at the Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu. Lesa Griffith, a seasoned writer and public relations professional, secured first place and a cash prize of $2,000 for her impressive spelling skills.
Following Griffith, Susan Proctor from Hilo took home $1,000 as the runner-up, while Christopher Moylan, also from Honolulu, earned $500 for his third-place finish. The competition brought together finalists from preliminary events held across Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu.
Finalists were supported by Hawaiian Airlines, which provided round-trip tickets to facilitate their participation in the final competition. The Kupuna Spelling Bee aims to promote mental acuity among residents aged 60 and older, encouraging them to engage in learning and practicing spelling as a means of strengthening memory.
Griffith’s prize package not only included the cash award but also two tickets from Alaska Airlines and a four-night stay at the California Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, enhancing the excitement of her victory. The cash prizes were generously donated by Dr. Jacquie Maly, a past lieutenant governor of Kiwanis, who has been a strong advocate for community engagement and support for the kupuna (elders).
This annual event highlights the importance of keeping the mind active and engaged, fostering a sense of community among the participants while celebrating their accomplishments. The Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee continues to be a cherished tradition, reinforcing the value of lifelong learning and camaraderie among Hawaii’s senior residents.
