MOORHEAD, MINN. — The Rev. Nadia Adonai has transformed her life after fleeing religious oppression in Iraq, finding freedom to practice her faith in the United States. Originally from Baghdad, Nadia grew up in a multicultural household with a Georgian mother and an Assyrian father, steeped in a rich tradition of Orthodox Christianity.
Nadia recalls her childhood vividly, describing moments with her grandmother praying in their garden and her father’s fervent prayers. “I remember my grandma sitting outside early in the morning, at 5:30. She would take her rosary and sit in the garden,” she said. The family’s Bibles included Aramaic, Arabic, and Latin, reflecting their deep-rooted faith. Despite the challenges posed by the rise of Shia Islam in Iraq, Nadia thrived in her faith community, attending a Catholic school affiliated with the parish of St. George.
Her passion for journalism led her to a successful career as a television news reporter, where she achieved recognition for her work across several countries, including Dubai and Russia. Yet, as conditions in her homeland deteriorated, she faced increasing restrictions on her ability to express her faith.
“I started crying and praying, telling God, ‘I’m sorry; it’s not me,’” she recalled, referencing a particularly difficult moment when she was compelled to wear a hijab during Ramadan. The situation worsened as violence surged in Iraq, with many Christians fleeing or facing persecution.
After enduring threats and violence, Nadia sought refuge in Moscow, only to find the lingering effects of decades of Communist rule. Her fears were confirmed when she returned home one day to find her apartment ransacked. “Her foreigner status had made her a target,” a neighbor explained. During this turbulent time, Nadia experienced a life-threatening moment when gunfire erupted in her home. “They were thinking she was in bed,” noted Rev. Richard Siedschlag, a friend who has supported her journey.
Eventually, Nadia and her family migrated to the United States and Canada, leaving behind a precarious existence. In 2014, she officially became a U.S. citizen and adopted the name Adonai, a choice she describes as a symbolic renewal. “The Lord gave (the name) to me so I can renounce everything old and start afresh,” she said.
With her journalism career behind her, Nadia embraced her calling as a pastor. “I only want to use my talent now for God’s glory,” she stated. She quickly became active in her new community, preaching at local churches, ministering to nursing home residents, and leading an online ministry aimed at supporting underground Christians in the Middle East.
Nadia’s efforts have already yielded significant results. “Recently, a family came to Jesus Christ from my ministry online,” she said. Her work resonates deeply with individuals facing persecution, as evidenced by a young woman from Kurdistan who shared her harrowing story of survival against ISIS.
Nadia’s presence in Moorhead has garnered admiration from local congregants. Kim Rude, a member of Grace Communion International, praised her inspiring faith and generosity. “She’s been through an awful lot — more than I can even imagine,” Rude said, highlighting Nadia’s compassionate outreach, which includes sharing delicious Middle Eastern dishes with those in need.
Pastor Richard Siedschlag described Nadia’s sermons as vibrant and filled with enthusiasm, emphasizing God’s provision and protection. “Her message seems focused on God’s provision and protection — something she’s lived,” he noted.
Nadia is committed to showcasing the blessings of religious freedom in America, a stark contrast to her past experiences. She actively encourages others to appreciate their freedoms, saying, “You have to thank the Lord for this country, to be thankful every day you have electricity, hot and cold water, food, and shelter.”
Now, as she continues her ministry, Nadia emphasizes hope for those facing various struggles, including addiction and homelessness. “Jesus is 24-7 available, and he never gives up on us,” she affirmed, reminding her community that anyone can start anew.
Through her journey of faith, Nadia Adonai exemplifies resilience and a profound commitment to her calling, inspiring those around her to embrace their freedoms and live with purpose.
