Speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca have been named the U.S. flagbearers for the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympics, scheduled to commence on February 6, 2026. This marks a historic moment as Jackson is the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics, while Del Duca becomes the first bobsledder in 70 years to take on this prestigious role.
The announcement was made by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee on Tuesday, following a vote among fellow athletes from Team USA. Jackson expressed her gratitude and the significance of this honor, stating, “Being chosen to represent the United States on the world stage is a tremendous honor. It represents my family, my teammates, my hometown, and everyone across the country who believes in the power of sport.”
Personal Significance and Heritage
Del Duca, who serves as a sergeant in the Army, holds a deep connection to Italy, enhancing the significance of the event for him. “With the Olympic Games being held in Italy, it means even more,” Del Duca remarked. “Nearly everyone in my family is of Italian descent. There is no greater honor than leading Team USA into the Opening Ceremony in Italy. It feels like a bridge between my family’s heritage and the country I’m so proud to serve.”
This opportunity is particularly poignant for Del Duca, as it aligns with his family’s roots while showcasing his commitment to representing the United States. Both athletes are looking forward to this unique Olympic experience, which will feature events spread across various cities in Italy.
A Legacy in Speedskating and Bobsledding
Jackson is preparing for her third Olympic appearance, while this will be Del Duca’s second. Jackson’s selection as flagbearer places her among the elite athletes in U.S. speedskating history, making her the eighth speedskater to earn this honor. Del Duca joins the ranks as the sixth bobsledder to carry the flag, illustrating the rich tradition of excellence in Team USA.
The upcoming Olympics will also serve as a redemption for Elana Meyers Taylor, who was initially slated to carry the American flag at the 2022 Beijing Olympics but had to forfeit that role due to a positive COVID-19 test. Taylor was replaced at the Beijing opening ceremony by speedskater Brittany Bowe, paving the way for Jackson’s moment to shine in Milan.
The excitement surrounding the Milan Cortina Olympics continues to build, with Team USA poised to showcase their talents on a global stage. The selection of Jackson and Del Duca as flagbearers not only honors their individual achievements but also reflects the diverse and competitive spirit of American athletes.
