Embrace New Beginnings: Seven Resolutions for a Fulfilling 2026

As the world welcomes 2026, many are reflecting on new beginnings and the opportunity to set meaningful resolutions. In her latest column, Abigail Van Buren, widely known as Dear Abby, offers a list of seven resolutions aimed at fostering personal growth and well-being. These suggestions have been influenced by the original principles of Al-Anon, a support organization for families and friends of alcoholics.

Seven Resolutions for a Better Year

Abby’s resolutions focus on embracing daily living, mental clarity, and kindness. The first resolution encourages individuals to concentrate on the present day: “I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow.” This approach emphasizes the importance of tackling challenges one day at a time, which can feel more manageable than setting daunting long-term goals.

The second resolution promotes a positive mindset: “I will decide to be happy.” By consciously choosing to let go of negative thoughts, individuals can cultivate a more optimistic outlook. Following this, Abby suggests accepting reality as it is: “I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.” This acceptance can lead to greater peace and reduced stress.

Intellectual engagement is another focal point. Abby encourages readers to improve their minds: “I will read something that requires effort, thought, and concentration.” This resolution reinforces the idea of lifelong learning, pushing individuals to challenge themselves intellectually.

Additionally, Abby underscores the significance of kindness: “I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable.” This resolution highlights the importance of treating others with respect and consideration, while also looking to improve personal appearance and communication. Advocating for personal responsibility, Abby states, “I will gather the courage to do what is right.” This resolution reminds readers of the importance of accountability.

Lastly, focusing on health is paramount. “I will do something positive to improve my health,” she states, encouraging individuals to consider lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or incorporating physical activity into their routine.

Guidelines for a Meaningful Year

In addition to Abby’s resolutions, a reader from New Delhi, India, L.J. Bhatia, shares a different perspective. Rather than setting specific resolutions, Bhatia suggests following guidelines inspired by the Holy Vedas. This philosophy emphasizes living according to the eternal laws of nature, which can lead to a more harmonious existence.

Bhatia also references the well-known prayer of St. Francis, which calls for individuals to be instruments of peace. This prayer emphasizes the values of love, forgiveness, and hope, serving as a powerful reminder of the impact one can have on the world.

Abby concludes her message with well wishes for the New Year, hoping that 2026 brings health, peace, and joy to all. Her column serves as a thoughtful reminder of the potential for personal transformation and the positive changes that can arise from new intentions.
