Denver’s Beloved Charlie’s Second Hand Tools to Close Permanently

Charlie’s Second Hand Tools, a cherished fixture in downtown Denver, is set to close its doors permanently on December 15, 2023. The store, located at 2227 Larimer Street, is currently offering a storewide discount of 50 percent as part of its going-out-of-business sale. A sign outside the shop boldly states, “EVERYTHING MUST GO.”

Established in 1946, Charlie’s has deep roots in the community, having originally opened in Pueblo in 1928 before relocating to Denver. The store has remained in family hands throughout its nearly eighty-year history, becoming a beloved destination for both local residents and visitors. Charlie’s survived through significant economic changes, including rising rents and property taxes, particularly as nearby neighborhoods like LoDo and RiNo transformed into vibrant cultural hubs.

A Living Museum of Tools

Walking into Charlie’s felt akin to stepping into a combination of a traditional tool shop and a nostalgic garage. Unlike many modern retail spaces characterized by digital catalogs and organized sections, Charlie’s offered a unique ambiance filled with tools and equipment from various eras. Shovels and hammers from decades past stood alongside nearly new saws and drills, creating an eclectic collection that was both functional and historical.

The store’s charm extended beyond its inventory. Employees possessed an extensive knowledge of tools, akin to curators of a living museum. This personal touch contributed to Charlie’s devoted following, establishing a cult fan base as it navigated the commercial real estate boom of the 2000s and 2010s.

Charlie’s catchy slogans, such as “What have you to sell?” and “We buy anything that doesn’t eat,” have endeared the shop to many. The store even offered T-shirts featuring the phrase, “We are oddly fond of tools,” further solidifying its quirky character.

Facing the End of an Era

As the store prepares to close, the community reflects on its impact and legacy. Charlie’s will continue operations with regular hours until its final day, inviting loyal customers to visit one last time. The announcement of the closure has prompted an outpouring of fond memories and tributes from those who frequented the shop over the years.

While the future of the storefront remains uncertain, the stories and experiences shared within its walls will resonate with many. Charlie’s Second Hand Tools stands as a testament to a simpler time in retail, where personal connections and unique finds were the norm.

As the countdown to December 15 begins, the community is encouraged to take advantage of the storewide discounts and celebrate the legacy of this beloved establishment.
