The 86th summer meet at Del Mar Racetrack commenced on July 18, 2023, drawing a vibrant crowd eager to showcase their fashion sense and enjoy a day of horse racing. Attendees arrived in stunning outfits, with many sporting elaborate hats, creating a festive atmosphere to mark the beginning of the racing season.
Singer-songwriter Joey Pearson kicked off the day with a compelling rendition of the national anthem. This year, a prominent fashion trend featured couples coordinating their outfits, particularly in stark black and white. Among the attendees, Sue LoGuercio and Mac Marray stood out in their striking red and white ensembles, with LoGuercio adorned by a dramatic red rose fascinator crafted by London milliner Pearls and Swine.
Polka dots emerged as a significant trend, with racegoers like Kathryn Gang and Danielle M. Rainey donning stylish black and white designs. The event also saw attendees like Denise Hug, who turned heads in a turquoise Picture Hat from boutique Finnia, complemented by her dress. Others, such as Aly Rishel and Kathie Rishel, showcased impressive hats from House of Macgregor and Arturo Rios, respectively.
The vibrant colors of tangerine and orange were also popular, with Armen Hovannesian catching attention in an orange suit paired with a straw fedora. This year, the influence of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour inspired many attendees to include cowboy hats in their outfits, with Jay Bat sporting a distinctive hat from American Hat Co.
Highlighting the day’s festivities was the 31st annual Opening Day Hats Contest, which celebrated creative headwear under the theme Monet-Ballet. Lili Martindale from Del Mar took home the title of Grand Prize winner, recognized for her Monet-inspired flower creation that she paired with a matching floral dress.
In the contest, Courtney Day from Oceanside won first place in the “Best Flowers” category with her outfit titled Rosey Gold, which incorporated real flowers. Nani Richards of Chula Vista earned the title of “Most Glamorous” for her entry named Soul to Soul, while Amy Brooker from Vista won “Best Racing” for her entry, Icing on the Cake. Brooker, a seven-year breast cancer survivor, dedicated her creation to her journey.
The Del Mar racing season is set to continue through September 7, 2023, with the prestigious Pacific Classic scheduled for August 30. For more details about upcoming events, visit dmtc.com.
