The city of Dayton is considering an honorary naming of a segment of Madison Street to commemorate the contributions of long-serving city employee, Amy C. Walbridge. The proposal would rename the portion of Madison Street from First Street to Third Street as “Amy C. Walbridge Way” for a two-year period. This initiative aims to honor Walbridge’s significant impact on the city’s economic development efforts.
During a recent city commission meeting, Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein praised Walbridge for her collaborative spirit and her ability to connect various stakeholders within the community. “When I needed to know anybody that was connected to anything or anyone, Amy was my go-to girl,” Dickstein stated, underscoring the pivotal role Walbridge played in various projects across the city.
Walbridge dedicated over three decades of her life to the city of Dayton, focusing on housing, neighborhood revitalization, and economic development. According to documents from the City Plan Board, “Development in greater downtown Dayton is closely associated with Amy, from the Arcade to the ballpark.” Her legacy is intertwined with numerous initiatives that have shaped the city’s landscape.
The proposal to honor Walbridge follows her passing in March 2025 at the age of 59. Commissioners shared heartfelt memories during the meeting, with Commissioner Matt Joseph expressing gratitude for her service. “She loved the city,” he said. “She loved the work. She was great at it. We’re in debt for the work that she did.”
The honorary naming will not alter the official name of Madison Street. Instead, the city plans to install blue signs above or below the existing street signs to indicate the new honorary designation. The Dayton City Commission heard the first reading of this proposal during their Wednesday evening meeting and is expected to vote on the matter during the upcoming meeting on March 11, 2025.
The community’s response to the proposal has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the respect and admiration for Walbridge’s contributions to Dayton. The honorary naming serves not only as a tribute to her legacy but also as an inspiration for future generations to engage in community development and public service.
As the city moves forward with the proposal, it highlights the profound impact that dedicated individuals like Walbridge have on local communities, leaving a lasting mark that continues to influence the city’s growth and development.
