The Congregational Church, UCC in Tryon has donated all proceeds from its fourth-quarter 2024 sales to the Green Riverkeeper program, which operates under the environmental organization MountainTrue. On July 24, 2024, Neil Rostick, representing the thrift store, presented a check for $3,395 to Erica Shanks, the Green Riverkeeper, to assist in the rehabilitation of local areas impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The funds will support efforts to restore environmental damage caused by the storm, reinforcing the community’s commitment to sustainability. The donation highlights the church’s dedication to caring for the environment and contributing to local restoration initiatives.
Community Support and Sustainable Practices
The Tryon Thrift Store, managed by youth members of the church, was established to repurpose church space while generating funds for community-focused projects. By selling vintage and secondhand items, the store has become a vital hub for sustainable shopping and charitable contributions.
Members of the church, alongside volunteers and customers from the surrounding community, were acknowledged for their pivotal role in the store’s success. According to the organizers, this donation reflects the church’s broader mission to support local environmental efforts and promote responsible land use.
Impact of the Green Riverkeeper Program
The Green Riverkeeper is part of a broader initiative by MountainTrue, aimed at enhancing water quality, preserving natural habitats, and promoting environmentally responsible practices in Western North Carolina. As the region continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene, the funds from the Congregational Church will play a crucial role in ongoing restoration efforts.
This collaboration between the church and environmental organizations underscores the importance of community engagement in tackling environmental issues. The donations not only support immediate recovery efforts but also foster a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship within the local community.
