In a remarkable display of compassion, Todd Finkelson, an appraiser with the Otter Tail County Assessor’s Office, intervened during a critical moment that could have ended in tragedy. While conducting a routine visit at a rural property, Finkelson engaged in a conversation with the property owner, who expressed alarming thoughts about self-harm involving a firearm.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Finkelson maintained his composure and offered support to the individual. He assured the property owner that he would seek assistance, promptly contacting law enforcement to ensure the person received the necessary help. His decisive actions de-escalated a potentially life-threatening crisis.
Recognition for Extraordinary Compassion
Weeks later, the property owner reached out to Finkelson, expressing gratitude for his timely intervention and revealing that he was doing well. This heartfelt acknowledgment underscored the profound impact of Finkelson’s actions. Heather Jacobson, Otter Tail County Assessor, praised his response, stating, “Todd’s response to this crisis was extraordinary. He showed incredible compassion and judgment in a difficult moment.”
Jacobson continued, “His willingness to stay with someone in crisis and get them the help they needed saved a life. We are very proud of him.” In recognition of his outstanding actions, Brandie Hanson, Chief Deputy Assessor, along with Jacobson, presented Finkelson with a plaque celebrating his compassionate response.
