Sally L. VanNostrand, aged 88, passed away on November 5, 2025, at her home in Gloversville, New York, surrounded by her loving family. A respected member of her community, Sally’s life was characterized by her devotion to family, friends, and local activities.
Born on October 2, 1937, to the late Emmett “Zip” Cranker and Irene Wilson Cranker Biron, Sally attended schools in Mayfield, NY. She contributed to her community for many years, notably working for the Leader Herald, delivering bundles of newspapers to carriers. Additionally, she was employed at Potter’s Leather Co., where she trimmed leather.
Her commitment to community extended to her role at the Foresters Club in Gloversville, where she actively participated in various club activities.
Sally was primarily a dedicated housewife, devoting her life to her children and grandchildren. Family was at the center of her world, and she took great joy in preparing meals for loved ones. Her family fondly recalls the delightful Sunday suppers she organized, featuring dishes such as roast beef from Bowmans Meat Market, macaroni salad, chocolate mayonnaise cake, and her famous Santa snacks.
In her community, Sally was affectionately known as “Ma” and “Gram” by many. She enjoyed spending her time on her front porch with family and friends, as well as taking leisurely Sunday drives in the Adirondacks, often in search of deer.
Sally is survived by her husband, Douglas VanNostrand; her son, William Sr. (Jennifer); daughter, Jodi (Tim); and son, James. She leaves behind an extensive family, including grandchildren William VanNostrand Jr. (Clyde and Brooks), Dane Dillenback, Emily VanNostrand, Jimmy Holmes, Jenea Hayes, Sheyann Eagan, Austin Eagan, Joshua VanNostrand, and Peyton (Samuelson) VanNostrand, along with several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah K. VanNostrand Holmes; brother, Terry W. Cranker; and grandson, Peter C. Bleyl.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sally’s name can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours on November 11, 2025, from 17:00 to 19:00 at the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home located at 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A funeral service will follow on November 12, 2025, at 11:00 at the funeral home, with burial to take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
