Joan Baker-Harvey, a beloved figure in her community, passed away on October 14, 2025, at the age of 75 in Kingston, New York. Her life, marked by intelligence and compassion, left a lasting impact on those who knew her.
Born on September 18, 1950, in Elmira, New York, Joan was the third of five children to James Rennells Jr. and Mary Jane Rennells (Henrich). Her early childhood was spent in Elmira Heights, where her father later married her stepmother, Photine Barends Rennells. Joan excelled academically, gaining recognition for her high intelligence and integrity throughout her educational journey.
After graduating from Thomas Alva Edison High School, Joan earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Elmira College. Following her studies, she lived in Plano, Texas, for several years before returning to New York, where she met her husband, William J. Harvey Jr.. Together, they shared a meaningful life, with Joan continuing her professional career while dedicating herself to helping others.
Joan is survived by her husband, siblings Marcia Au (Lieu), Mary Lou Campbell (David), James Rennells III, Kris Barends, Kathy May (Mike), Donna Little, Cherie Mazda, Tom Barends (Toni), and Ted Rennells (Tricia). She was predeceased by her father, James Rennells Jr., her mother Mary Jane Henrich, her stepfather Carl Henrich, and siblings Michael Barends and Richard Rennells.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc. located at 27 Smith Avenue, Kingston. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for October 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Saint Joseph’s Church in Kingston, followed by burial at New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
Joan Baker-Harvey will be remembered not only for her academic accomplishments but also for her warmth and dedication to family and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
