James Donald “Jim” Early, aged 87, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, in Waterford, New York. A beloved figure in his community, Jim was known for his dedication to education, service, and his family. Although born on July 3, he often celebrated his birthday on the Fourth of July, embracing the spirit of the holiday.
Born at Brady Hospital in Albany, New York, Jim was the third of five children of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq., and Loretto Powers Early. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth M. Early, along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Jim’s family life was marked by love and devotion. He married Helen K. Clark in June 1967, and together they raised five daughters. Tragically, their daughter Mary Ellen Early passed away on June 26, 2025.
Career and Community Involvement
Jim’s career was deeply rooted in education. After graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in 1955, he began his studies for the priesthood at Mater Christie Seminary and later at Saint Bernard’s Seminary. Ultimately, he chose a different path, transitioning into a fulfilling career in education. He served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and taught English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College from August 1967 until his retirement in December 1999.
Following his retirement, Jim was appointed Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford, where he served with integrity for a decade. He also worked as a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with Realty USA, contributing to his community in various ways.
His commitment to service extended beyond education. Jim was a proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for 57 years, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to his community. In addition, he was a passionate church musician, serving as the organist at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. His affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, Council 237 in Waterford, and the Waterford Lions Club further exemplified his community engagement.
Legacy and Final Arrangements
In his later years, Jim faced health challenges and received loving care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy. He is remembered as a devoted father and grandfather, leaving behind nine grandchildren: Shannon F. Hastings, Julie K. Cullinan, Megan G. Neff, Liam J. McMahan, Sean M. McMahan, Patrick J. Esposito, Andrew P. Esposito, Kevin J. Grignon, and Jennifer H. Grignon.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home in Waterford, followed by a Mass at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford. Friends and relatives are invited to visit the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m..
