Russell D. Pettijohn, a beloved member of the St. Joseph community, passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 96. His death marks the end of a life dedicated to family, service, and community involvement. Born on December 1, 1928, in Grant City, Missouri, to Orten and Bertha (Dick) Pettijohn, Russell leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment.
He is survived by his two sons, Jeff Pettijohn and Brad Pettijohn, along with their spouses, Robin and Greta, respectively. Russell was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Lori O’Neal, Jason Pettijohn, Robert Pettijohn, Renee Pettijohn, Luke Pettijohn, Alex Pettijohn, and Julia Pettijohn Strawhecker. His family also includes nine great-grandchildren, siblings Joan Elford and Donald Pettijohn, and several nieces and nephews.
Russell’s long life was marked by significant milestones and contributions. He was married to Glee Pettijohn for 69 years until her passing. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Wesley Pettijohn, and siblings-in-law, including Dorothy Pettijohn, Sam Elford, and Lucy Pettijohn.
A Life of Service and Community Engagement
Growing up in St. Joseph, Russell graduated from Lafayette High School in 1946. He took pride in serving his country in the Missouri Air National Guard and the U.S. Air Force, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. His professional career included a 30-year tenure at the St. Joseph News-Press in various roles, as well as 7.5 years with the St. Joseph School District Maintenance Department.
Russell and Glee were active members of the Savannah Sashayers Square Dance Club, enjoying over 40 years of dancing together. His commitment to community extended to his involvement with St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member.
Passions and Memories
In addition to his community activities, Russell had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening, often spending time working in his yard. The couple also embraced the snowbird lifestyle, traveling to Texas, Arizona, and Florida for many years, creating cherished memories in warmer climates.
Family was Russell’s greatest treasure, with special emphasis placed on the time spent with his grandchildren. His legacy is one of love, dedication, and a strong sense of family values.
Farewell services are scheduled for 10:00 on October 4, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will host a gathering for friends from 17:00 to 19:00 on October 3, 2025, at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Missouri Right to Life or Mosaic Life Care Hospice.
