The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) will honor Chief Magistrate Judge Thérèse Wiley Dancks this week during its 150th anniversary award ceremony in Manhattan. Judge Dancks will receive the prestigious Ruth G. Schapiro Award, which recognizes her significant contributions to the legal community and her commitment to mentoring future generations of lawyers.
As a United States Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of New York, Judge Dancks made history in 2012 by becoming the first woman to hold this position. Since her appointment, she has been dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for young legal professionals. Judge Dancks has mentored over 50 law students through externships and has opened her courtroom to students of various ages. She provides invaluable insights into the court system, citizenship, and legal careers.
In addition to her mentoring efforts, Judge Dancks actively participates in initiatives promoting diversity within the judiciary. She serves on the diversity committee of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association and often speaks at panels addressing diversity issues. Her efforts in this area reflect a commitment to ensuring the judiciary is representative of the communities it serves.
Judge Dancks is also recognized for her leadership within the Central New York Women’s Bar Association, where she previously held the position of president. During her tenure, she established the Domestic Violence Legal Assistance Clinic, which has received awards for its effectiveness in providing crucial legal support to survivors of domestic violence.
The NYSBA’s award ceremony will also recognize three other individuals from Central New York for their contributions to the legal field. This event not only celebrates the achievements of these legal professionals but also underscores the ongoing importance of mentorship and diversity in the legal system.
As Judge Dancks prepares to accept the Ruth G. Schapiro Award, her legacy of mentorship and commitment to justice continues to inspire many within the legal community. Her work exemplifies the values of leadership and service that the NYSBA seeks to promote through this award.
