Capturing Raw Talent: Tips from a First-Time Model Shoot

Photographer and director Walid Azami recently collaborated with a novice model who had no previous experience in front of the camera. Instead of attempting to mask the inherent awkwardness of a first-time shoot, Azami chose to document the entire process, sharing insights aimed at helping both photographers and models. The resulting video offers valuable tips for those new to the industry.

One of the primary takeaways from Azami’s experience is the importance of embracing vulnerability. He advises models to push past feelings of self-consciousness. If a model finds themselves thinking, “I feel so awkward right now,” it often translates to powerful imagery. Azami encourages models to let go of their inhibitions, as this can lead to authentic expressions that resonate with the camera.

Azami emphasizes that a model’s role is to convey emotion. He consistently reminds his subjects of this throughout the shoot. This approach not only boosts the model’s confidence but also enhances the overall quality of the photographs.

Lighting and Angles: Essential Techniques

For photographers struggling with lighting, Azami shares a simple yet effective technique he refers to as the “thumb trick.” By holding up his thumb and imagining it as the model’s nose, he can quickly assess how light interacts with the subject’s features. This method provides insight into the best angles and lighting conditions without wasting time moving the model around the set.

Another significant tip involves camera angles. Azami points out that shooting from below can create a sense of power and presence, making the subject appear larger than life. This technique is particularly beneficial for new models who may not yet feel confident in front of the camera. Conversely, shooting from above can produce a more intimate or vulnerable perspective, which may not be suitable for all situations.

Azami argues that understanding these fundamentals can make a substantial difference in how a model is perceived in photographs. He underscores the notion that the right angle can elevate a model’s presence, akin to tactics used in political photography to project strength or weakness.

The insights shared by Azami during this session highlight the ongoing need for photographers to refine their skills and enhance their ability to guide models. With the full video available for viewing, aspiring photographers are encouraged to learn from Azami’s experience.

Known for his work with iconic figures such as Madonna, Kanye West, J.Lo, and Mariah Carey, Azami has made a name for himself in the industry. He is also recognized as the first Afghan photographer to shoot the cover of Vanity Fair and has directed a VOTY-nominated video. Additionally, he leads VBA, a free Discord community for photographers and filmmakers, where he continues to share his expertise and support emerging talents in the field.

Through his guidance, Azami not only empowers new models but also inspires photographers to embrace creativity and innovation in their work.
