Canine Behaviourist Reveals Top Three Breeds for Families

Choosing the ideal dog for a family can be a daunting task. Canine behaviourist Will Atherton recently shared insights on his TikTok account about three dog breeds he considers to be the best companions. According to Atherton, these breeds are not often seen in his facility for advanced behaviour modification, which he interprets as a positive indicator of their suitability for families.

Top Recommendations for Family Dogs

Atherton’s top recommendation is the Labrador Retriever. While he acknowledges that he frequently encounters this breed in his training sessions, he notes that any behavioural issues are usually minor. “Labradors are so loving and eager to meet people and play with other dogs that they might pull a little or jump a little,” he explained. Atherton emphasizes that these behaviours are “dead easy” to correct, making Labradors an excellent choice for families.

The PDSA confirms that Labrador Retrievers are “devoted, affectionate, loving dogs that will happily get along with everyone.” They are obedient, quick to learn, and eager to please, making training relatively straightforward. Potential owners should be prepared to commit to at least two hours of exercise daily to keep these energetic dogs happy and healthy.

Next on Atherton’s list is the English Mastiff. He expressed a desire to work with more of this breed, stating, “I think they’re one of the best breeds on the planet.” English Mastiffs are known for their calm and good-natured temperament, which makes them excellent companions. According to the PDSA, these dogs “tend to get on well with everyone.” They require at least one hour of exercise each day, but care should be taken not to over-exercise them when they are puppies, as their joints are still developing.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: The Ideal Small Breed

Completing Atherton’s recommendations is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He described this breed as “one of the best small breeds on the planet” and suggested that families may avoid unnecessary challenges by opting for Cavaliers over more energetic working breeds like cocker spaniels and Jack Russells.

The PDSA supports this view, noting that Cavaliers are “great little dogs that suit family environments.” They are particularly known for their affinity for children and desire to please their owners. With exercise needs of just 45 minutes to an hour each day, Cavaliers are ideal for families with busy schedules.

As families consider adding a dog to their household, Atherton advises conducting thorough research to ensure they select a breed that aligns with their lifestyle. He encourages potential pet owners to consider adopting from rescue shelters, providing a loving home to dogs in need.

In summary, Atherton’s insights highlight how certain breeds, including the Labrador Retriever, English Mastiff, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, tend to exhibit positive behaviours, making them suitable choices for family companions.
