A new chapter for student-athletes at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has begun with the establishment of the “Arkansas Al” Endowed Scholarship, funded by a generous contribution of $25,000 from long-time supporter Bob Sadler. This scholarship honors the legacy of “Arkansas Al” Janssen, a beloved figure in Little Rock Athletics, known for his enthusiastic presence at games and his pivotal role in the Trojan Legion Club.
The newly established scholarship aims to provide essential financial support to student-athletes, helping them pursue their educational aspirations while competing at a high level. Sadler, who dedicated over 40 years to his career at Entergy, has been a season ticket holder for both men’s and women’s basketball since the early 1980s. He expressed that the motivation behind his generous gift was deeply personal, rooted in a desire to preserve Janssen’s memory and the spirit of the Trojan Legion Club.
Preserving a Legacy
“When Al died five years ago, we wanted to set up a scholarship in his name,” Sadler remarked. “I didn’t want the legacy of our club to fade away. In some small way, I want to make sure the memory of the Trojan Legion Club continues on.” Sadler’s extensive involvement with the club has included nearly every leadership role, and he hopes this scholarship will reflect the camaraderie and dedication that Janssen embodied.
Originally founded in the early 1980s as the Tip-In Club to support the basketball program, the Trojan Legion Club has evolved into the largest and longest-standing booster organization within Little Rock Athletics. The club now supports all athletic programs, raising vital resources and fostering school spirit while creating a welcoming environment for Trojan fans.
Sadler’s connection to Trojan sports began early in his career when his employer sponsored his college night classes. As a student, he was able to attend basketball games for free, which ignited his passion for the sport. “My first game was in the old gym,” he recalled. “When Coach Mike Newell came on and the glory years began, we traveled to New York and Minneapolis, and I was there when we beat Notre Dame and went to our first NCAA Tournament. I just enjoy live sports, and I’ve attended for decades.”
Supporting Student-Athletes
The “Arkansas Al” Endowed Scholarship is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of student-athletes at UA Little Rock. Sadler emphasized the importance of education in the athletes’ journeys. “Hopefully this scholarship will help student-athletes get an education, which is the reason they’re really here,” he said.
This initiative not only honors Janssen’s legacy but also ensures that the spirit of camaraderie among Trojan fans continues to inspire and support future generations of student-athletes. As the scholarship is implemented, it will serve as a reminder of the lasting impact that dedicated supporters can have on their community and the lives of young athletes striving for success in both sports and academics.
