Arapahoe Basin Delays Parking Reservations Amid Snow Shortage

Arapahoe Basin has postponed its parking reservation requirement, initially set to begin this weekend, due to insufficient snow conditions. The ski area, located in Colorado, is currently reporting a base depth of just 21 inches, which is approximately half of the expected amount for this time of year. As a result, only nine of its 147 runs are operational, with five of nine lifts in service.

The decision to delay the reservation system for two weeks was made in consideration of skier experience and overall conditions. A statement from resort officials emphasized their commitment to flexibility in operations, noting, “As a ski area, we take pride in being flexible, updating our policies and operation as we need to support our people as best we can.”

According to the resort’s spokesperson, Shayna Silverman, the current weather has impacted skiing options significantly. “Basically, the reasoning is that we recognize that skiing and riding is limited at this time,” Silverman stated. “The product is not what it usually is at this time of year due to weather and conditions.”

When asked if the poor snow conditions had led to a decline in skier visits, Silverman refrained from commenting on specific numbers. However, she confirmed that the limited terrain was the primary factor in the decision to postpone the reservation requirement.

For those who had already booked parking for this weekend and the following weekend, automatic refunds will be processed. The parking reservation system, which was introduced last winter to manage capacity on peak days, is now set to commence on January 17, 2024. Once implemented, it will apply only on weekends, with a planned end date of May 3, 2024.

Most reservations will cost $20, although options for carpooling are available, allowing free parking for vehicles with four or more passengers, provided a reservation is made. On days when the reservation requirement is in effect, parking will be free after 1 p.m., with no reservation needed.

As Arapahoe Basin navigates these challenging snow conditions, the resort remains focused on ensuring a positive experience for its visitors while prioritizing safety and accessibility.
