The highly anticipated photography exhibition “Wonderland,” featuring the work of renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, opened this week in Spain at the Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation. This marks the first major survey of Leibovitz’s work in the country, attracting a star-studded audience that included fashion icons such as Linda Evangelista and designer Willy Chavarria.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive look at Leibovitz’s illustrious career, showcasing her evolution from capturing intimate portraits of musicians for Rolling Stone—such as Bob Dylan, Grace Slick, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards—to her expansive work in art, cinema, music, sports, politics, and fashion. Notably, a significant portion of the fashion photography featured in “Wonderland” has never been displayed publicly before.
Celebrating Women’s Representation
During the opening, Marta Ortega Pérez, founder and president of the foundation, praised Leibovitz’s extraordinary talent. “Annie has a magical ability to catch the aura of the people she is photographing,” she stated. “Her genius lies in her ability to consistently find the moments, the truths, that nobody else sees.” Ortega Pérez emphasized Leibovitz’s role as a champion for women of all ages, noting that her images of older women possess a grandeur and beauty that is unparalleled.
“Wonderland” is the sixth photography exhibition organized by the MOP Foundation. Previous exhibitions have highlighted the works of notable photographers, including Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, and Irving Penn. The first exhibition opened in December 2021, featuring Lindbergh’s iconic images, while the latest show, “David Bailey’s Changing Fashion,” debuted in June and included over 140 photographs, showcasing portraits of cultural luminaries.
As the art community and fashion industry converge in Spain for this landmark exhibition, “Wonderland” not only celebrates Leibovitz’s contributions to photography but also serves as a platform for discussions around women’s representation in the arts. With its rich history and diverse offerings, the MOP Foundation continues to be a pivotal space for artistic expression and cultural dialogue.
The exhibition is expected to draw significant attention, underscoring Leibovitz’s legacy and reinforcing the importance of visual storytelling in contemporary culture. Visitors to “Wonderland” will have the opportunity to experience the depth of Leibovitz’s work, capturing moments that resonate with audiences worldwide.
