Ann Gorman‘s photography and poetry exhibit, titled “Through My Lens,” opens on August 8, 2023, at the Watermark Art Center in Bemidji. The exhibit is hosted in the Lakeview Gallery and focuses on the themes of biodiversity and the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly, which Gorman has observed in her own garden.
The exhibition highlights the remarkable journey of the monarch butterfly, detailing its lifecycle from larva to adult. Visitors can explore the butterfly’s annual migration to Mexico and the struggles it faces along the way. According to a press release from Watermark Art Center, the exhibit showcases the monarch’s resilience and the multiple generations that flourish in Minnesota each year, culminating in the awe-inspiring “super generation” that makes the long trek south in the fall and returns north in the spring.
Each photograph is paired with a poem that articulates the emotional narrative of the monarch butterfly, inviting viewers to engage with the subject beyond its visual representation. Gorman’s work encourages a deeper connection to nature and raises awareness of the importance of biodiversity in gardening.
A reception for “Through My Lens” is scheduled for August 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with Gorman giving a talk at 6 p.m. The exhibit will remain open to the public until September 27, 2023.
Watermark Art Center’s galleries are accessible free of charge, operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
