Suspected Gunman Fatally Shot at Wayne Church Identified

WAYNE, Mich. – A Michigan man was identified as the suspect in a planned mass shooting at a Wayne church in suburban Detroit. The suspect, who was fatally shot by church security, has been named as Brian Anthony Browning, a 31-year-old resident of Romulus.

Immediate Impact

The incident occurred on Sunday morning at CrossPointe Community Church during a special youth service. Browning, armed with an AR-15 style rifle and other weapons, was confronted by a church member who ran him over with a truck, followed by church security who fatally shot him.

Key Details Emerge

Wayne police have confirmed that Browning’s mother is a member of the church, and he had attended services there a few times over the past year. The investigation, supported by the FBI and local law enforcement, is ongoing as authorities piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

Authorities revealed Browning was armed with an AR-15 style rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Church’s Response

CrossPointe Community Church issued a statement asking for prayers for both the church members and Browning’s family. The church is closed for the week to undergo repairs and cleaning.

By the Numbers

Approximately 150 people were present at the service, with more children than usual attending the special vacation Bible school service.

Security Measures

The church’s security team, established a decade ago in response to national incidents of violence at places of worship, played a crucial role in preventing a potentially larger tragedy. Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. praised the quick actions of the security team and church members.

Background Context

Browning had no prior criminal history or contact with Wayne Police. Investigators suggest he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.

“There is no evidence to believe that this act of violence has any connection with the conflict in the Middle East,” officials stated.

What Comes Next

The church plans to utilize grief counseling services and community support to aid in the healing process. They have expressed gratitude for the swift response from law enforcement and first responders.

As the investigation continues, Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness and training, which he credits with saving lives during the incident.

The church community remains resilient, committed to their mission, and hopeful for healing in the aftermath of the traumatic event.
