September Sparks Action for Suicide Prevention Awareness

September marks a critical time for raising awareness about suicide prevention. As communities prepare for the fall season, the focus shifts to a stark reality: in the United States, a person dies by suicide every 11 seconds. This statistic underscores the urgency of the issue, as countless lives are affected daily.

Each year, approximately 1 in 20 U.S. adults seriously considers suicide. Among college students, over 24,000 make attempts annually. In South Dakota, suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10 to 19 and tragically stands as the leading cause for young adults aged 20 to 34. These numbers reveal a pressing need for awareness and action.

Certain groups face disproportionately higher risks. Native populations in the U.S. have a suicide risk 2.9 times higher than the national average. Farmers, often grappling with isolation and stress, experience a suicide rate 3.5 times greater than that of the general population. Additionally, LGBTQ+ youth are particularly vulnerable, being four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

The impact of suicide extends far beyond the individual. Each death affects an estimated 135 people, with 11 experiencing life-altering consequences. In tight-knit communities like those in South Dakota, these losses resonate deeply, leaving families and friends to grapple with their grief and the question of what more could have been done.

Confronting Stigma and Fostering Support

Suicide Prevention Month is a time for awareness, education, and hope. It challenges communities to confront the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open dialogue and understanding. By recognizing the warning signs, individuals can play a pivotal role in providing support to those in need.

Warning signs include:

– Talking about wanting to die or feeling like a burden
– Experiencing overwhelming sadness, guilt, or shame
– Behavioral changes such as withdrawing from loved ones or giving away possessions
– Engaging in risk-taking behaviors or substance abuse

These signs can often go unnoticed, but understanding them can lead to timely intervention and support.

In the Mitchell area of South Dakota, several organizations are taking initiative this September to enhance resources and support within the community. Non-profits including Lost&Found, the Davison County Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Coalition, Rooted 23, and Tegan’s Light are hosting events aimed at raising awareness and fostering community resilience.

Upcoming events include:

– **September 15**: Screening of *My Ascension* at 18:30 at the BankWest Community Room
– **September 17**: Virtual discussion on Access to Lethal Means from 12:00 to 13:00 (Lost&Found)
– **September 18**: Chalk the Walk event to creatively share messages of hope
– **September 25**: QPR Training (Question, Persuade, Refer) at noon at Plains Commerce Bank (Davison County MH & Suicide Prevention Coalition)
– **September 27**: The 437 Project Community Stop at 19:00 at the Corn Palace

Further details about these initiatives can be found on the respective Facebook pages of the organizations involved. Each event presents an opportunity for community members to learn, reflect, and support mental health initiatives.

As suicide affects individuals across all demographics, it is crucial to recognize that it can touch anyone’s life. The good news is that everyone can contribute to a solution. By engaging in open conversations, educating ourselves, and participating in local initiatives, communities can become part of a life-saving movement.

This September, let us all commit to showing up and speaking out for one another. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Reach out to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. The service is confidential, available 24/7, and free of charge.
