Russ Borden, Jr., a cherished husband and father, passed away on October 8, 2025, at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family during his final moments. His legacy is marked by his dedication to both his family and his career in engineering.
Early Life and Education
Born on August 13, 1947, in Portsmouth, VA, Russ was the son of Claire (Taylor) and Russell Borden, Sr. He completed his high school education at Montville High School, graduating in the Class of 1965. Following high school, he pursued further studies at Mitchell College and Mohegan Community College, which laid the foundation for his later career.
Career and Military Service
Russ Borden dedicated much of his professional life to General Dynamics, specifically in the Electric Boat Division. Here, he played a crucial role in the Naval Architecture Weight Engineering Department, contributing to the design and ballasting of many submarines, including the 668s and TRIDENT class vessels. His work significantly impacted naval engineering and the safety of U.S. naval operations.
In addition to his engineering career, Russ served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. It was during his military service that he met his future wife, JoAnn Lussier. The couple married on September 13, 1969, forming a partnership that would last over five decades.
After his discharge from the military, Russ returned to Connecticut and continued his work at Electric Boat until his retirement in 2008, after a remarkable 42 years of service.
Family and Legacy
Following retirement, Russ and JoAnn moved to Williamsburg, VA, where they enjoyed their golden years together. Russ is survived by his wife, JoAnn, and their three children: Todd Borden (Maggie) of Olvera, Spain; Tara Borden of Nyack, New York; and Seth Borden of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. He is also survived by his grandson, Benjamin Borden, along with his sisters, Janet Beving and Pamela Tashea, and many nieces and nephews.
Russ was predeceased by his parents, a nephew, Craig Beving, and his brother-in-law, Roger Beving. His family reflects on their shared moments with deep gratitude, stating, “Russ, you were an incredible husband, soulmate, and we had 56 incredible years together. Dad, you were and are a beautiful soul and true inspiration. We will miss the many moments in your presence.”
Final Arrangements
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the case management team at Heartland Hospice and the staff at the Hospice House of Williamsburg for their compassionate care. In keeping with Russ’s wishes, he will be cremated, and his life will be celebrated in a private ceremony.
