Rowan County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has partnered with Novant Health to implement a new initiative that allows EMS vehicles to carry units of whole blood. This advancement aims to enhance emergency medical care for patients suffering from severe blood loss prior to their arrival at the hospital.
Improving Emergency Response
The introduction of whole blood into emergency response protocols represents a significant step in pre-hospital care. Whole blood, which contains red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and clotting factors, is recognized as the most effective treatment for patients experiencing hemorrhagic shock. Research indicates that early administration of whole blood can improve outcomes for trauma patients by commencing resuscitation promptly.
“This advancement brings hospital-level care closer to the patient when time is critical,” stated Gary Blabon, president of Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. “Novant Health’s partnership with Rowan County EMS is strengthening the emergency care system and helping ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.”
Implementation and Coordination
The partnership facilitates a coordinated effort between Rowan County EMS and Novant Health’s blood bank, ensuring that EMS teams have immediate access to whole blood during emergency situations. This model aligns with national best practices in emergency medicine and reflects a growing trend to deliver blood products earlier in the course of treatment.
With this new protocol, Rowan County EMS aims to significantly improve the chances of survival for patients facing critical medical emergencies. By carrying whole blood on their vehicles, EMS teams can begin life-saving interventions before patients reach the hospital, potentially reducing the impact of severe blood loss.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in emergency care within Salisbury and surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of timely medical intervention in critical situations. As emergency services evolve, the integration of whole blood into pre-hospital protocols represents a commitment to enhancing patient outcomes and delivering high-quality care.
