Ron Washington to Miss Remainder of Angels Season Due to Health Concerns

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will remain on medical leave for the rest of the 2025 season, the team announced ahead of Friday’s game against the Washington Nationals. This decision follows Washington’s initial leave last Friday due to undisclosed health issues.

Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery, who has been acting as interim manager since Washington’s departure, will continue to lead the team for the remainder of the season. “The fortunate part is he knows what he needs to do, and from a health standpoint, he knows how to get better,” Angels general manager Perry Minasian informed reporters on Friday.

Washington’s Impact on the Angels

Ron Washington, 73, has been a pivotal figure in Major League Baseball for nearly three decades. His absence from the dugout is felt deeply by the team and fans alike. “In my opinion, and I think a lot of people’s opinion, the game of baseball is 1000 times better when Ron Washington’s part of it on a daily basis — we all know that,” Minasian added, emphasizing Washington’s influence on the sport.

Washington’s leadership has been instrumental in the Angels’ performance this season. Under his guidance, the team has shown significant improvement, which is reflected in their current standing. The Angels are holding a 40-40 record and are 7 1/2 games back in the AL West as of Friday’s play.

Health Comes First

Despite the team’s reliance on his leadership, Washington’s health remains the top priority. “We all know how important this is for all of us, but health is more important than anything,” Minasian stated. “Me personally, I’m not letting him back in the dugout until I know he’s 100 percent OK. I love the guy too much.”

Washington’s commitment to the team is unwavering, and he has expressed his desire to remain involved, albeit from a distance. “Wash has not felt great the last couple of days,” Minasian had mentioned earlier. “We want to make sure he’s 100 percent before he’s back in the dugout and managing.”

Player Reactions and Team Dynamics

Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe highlighted Washington’s significant role in the team’s dynamics. “He’s got 26 sons in here, so that’s a lot to juggle if we’re all texting at the same time,” O’Hoppe remarked. “We haven’t talked to him much individually but he knows they’re thinking about him.”

Washington’s influence extends beyond the field, as he has been a catalyst for the Angels’ turnaround this season. His absence presents a challenge, but the team remains united in their support for him.

Looking Ahead

As the Angels continue their season under Montgomery’s interim leadership, the focus remains on maintaining their momentum and honoring Washington’s contributions. The team’s performance in the upcoming games will be crucial in determining their standing in the league.

Meanwhile, the baseball community awaits Washington’s recovery, hopeful for his return to the game he has significantly shaped over the years. His health and well-being are paramount, and his legacy in baseball continues to inspire players and fans alike.
