James Thomas Schermerhorn, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 96 after a prolonged period of declining health. Born on May 13, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of the late James and Edith Thomas Schermerhorn. His life was marked by dedicated service to his country, a passion for education, and a deep love for family.
Military Service and Education
During the Korean War, Jim served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force at the Military Air Transport Headquarters. After his military service, he pursued higher education, earning an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, followed by a Bachelor of Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He furthered his studies with a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.
Jim’s teaching career began at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Florida, where he taught art from 1963 to 1992. He held the position of Chair of the Art Department, shaping the artistic journeys of countless students. In addition, he served as an adjunct instructor at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, sharing his expertise and passion for art.
A Multifaceted Passion for Life
Beyond his dedication to teaching, Jim was an accomplished artist who worked with acrylics and oils. His creative pursuits extended to gardening, where he became an avid grower and hybridizer of daylilies. Family and friends fondly remember his love for woodworking, as well as his enthusiasm for traveling and playing cards.
After relocating to North Carolina, Jim became an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, where he contributed as an usher and served on the grounds committee. His travels took him to diverse locations, including Turkey, Europe, Hawaii, the American Southwest, Alaska, and parts of South and Central America, experiences that enriched his life and those around him.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Leora Schermerhorn, and their sons, Charlie (Carol) and Andy (Tatiana). He leaves behind cherished grandchildren, April (Jeff), Adam (Cassidy), Bella, and James, along with great-grandchildren, Bryson and Hunter. His siblings, Bonnie Pillivant (Don), Carol Williams, and Dr. Richard (Renee) Schermerhorn, as well as his sister-in-law Shirley Steele and numerous nieces and nephews, will also miss him dearly.
Memorial Service Details
A memorial service to honor Jim’s life will take place at 11 a.m. on January 24, 2026, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Winter Park, Florida, where he and Leora were married in 1966. A reception will follow at 1044 Terrace Blvd., Orlando. Burial will occur at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
