Querbes Park Golf Course in Shreveport, Louisiana, marks its 100th anniversary on March 15, 2024, by offering an exciting challenge to golfers. Eleven randomly selected participants will have the opportunity to win $1 million by making a hole-in-one. This significant event kicks off a weekend of festivities, including a centennial tournament featuring a chance to win a prestigious $12,000 trip to Pebble Beach.
The centennial celebration reflects on a rich history, as emphasized by Nathan Barrow, the operations director. “Today is the exact date of the first-ever tournament here at Querbes Park. Back then, it was called the Broadmoor Golf Club,” he stated. The excitement has been palpable since the launch of the centennial festivities 100 days ago, with many looking forward to the moment when one of the eleven golfers swings for the million-dollar prize.
Participants are already forming camaraderie, as illustrated by golfer Kraig Wood, who said, “We’re actually splitting it. If he makes it, he’s going to give me half, and if I make it, I’m going to give him half. We’re partners.” This collaborative spirit underlines the community aspect of the event, bringing together friends and families to celebrate their shared connection to the park.
The weekend is not solely about competition; it’s also an opportunity to honor the community that has flourished over the past century. “Kids are coming in droves to learn how to play golf because they hear their parents, their grandparents, and great-grandparents talk about the memories they created coming to the old summer youth camps, swimming, playing tennis, or playing golf here at Querbes Park,” Barrow added.
In a nod to the future, a time capsule will be buried at the park, scheduled to be opened in the year 2125. This initiative aims to provide future generations of golfers with insights into life at Querbes Park in 2025. The idea of preserving memories resonates deeply with those who have grown up at the venue.
Reflecting on his personal journey, John Noles, another golfer and long-time patron, shared his sentiments: “I started playing golf here as a kid. I grew up here, have played so many rounds, and made so many great memories. I can’t imagine a better way to support this place than playing in the tournament this weekend.”
As Querbes Park Golf Course celebrates this milestone, it not only looks back at its storied past but also forward to a vibrant future, fostering new memories for generations to come.
