BROWNSBURG — A local tattoo artist is taking significant steps to break the stigma surrounding tattoos and mental health. Joshua Short, who has spent nearly two decades as a tattoo artist, is organizing the first-ever Tattoos Saved My Life Convention, scheduled for January 1-3, 2027. This event aims to highlight the therapeutic aspects of tattooing and the emotional healing it can provide.
According to the Pew Research Center, over 30% of U.S. adults now have at least one tattoo, a shift that has transformed the perception of body art from taboo to a form of personal expression. Short founded his nonprofit, Tattoos Saved My Life, to address the mental health benefits associated with getting tattoos. He noted that many clients turn to this art form as a means of emotional healing.
“On a day-to-day basis, I am able to help turn people’s stories into art. I help celebrate, commemorate, and memorialize,” Short explained. His work has attracted a diverse clientele, including professionals from various sectors. “I find myself tattooing more doctors, law enforcement, and nurses,” he added, indicating a growing acceptance of tattoos in traditionally conservative fields.
The upcoming convention will serve as a platform for tattoo artists to share their experiences and the positive impact their work has had on mental health. Short emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, “I felt it would be a really awesome way to broadcast to the community what tattoo artists are all about.”
In addition to showcasing art, the convention will foster discussions about mental health support. Tattoo artist Ryan Dearringer, who collaborates with Short, highlighted the crucial role of community and connection. “I have people that I know who don’t have a lot of support in their lives. I will call them on Christmas and be like, ‘Hey, how you doing?’”
Tickets for the convention will go on sale on March 14, with the event expected to attract both artists and attendees interested in exploring the intersection of tattoos and mental health. The convention aims to create a welcoming environment where stories can be shared, and stigma can be addressed.
As tattoos continue to gain acceptance in society, events like the Tattoos Saved My Life Convention are essential in promoting understanding and compassion around mental health issues.
