James William Cerullo, a devoted family man and respected Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, at the age of 87. He succumbed to complications from End Stage Alzheimer’s after residing at The Barclay at Boynton Beach for the past two years. His life was marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family.
Born on April 28, 1938, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Jim Cerullo was the son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth Cerullo. He often recounted his formative years in Catholic school, sharing stories about the nuns who guided him. One of his favorite memories involved a witty exchange with a Sister, who called him a “perfect fool.” Jim’s quick retort, “Nobody’s perfect, Sister,” highlighted his playful spirit.
After graduating high school, Cerullo joined the Navy, where he trained as a weatherman. His 20-year military career took him to various locations, including Hawaii and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the National Weather Service, as well as the early days of the Weather Channel in Atlanta.
During his time in Atlanta, Cerullo pursued further education, earning both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in counseling psychology. He found fulfillment in working as a counselor within the Florida prison system, later transitioning to schools for children with behavioral challenges. His family described him as kind and humble, traits he instilled in those around him.
As Cerullo aged, he faced health challenges, including a stroke in 2023, which necessitated his move to assisted living. His family remained close, with frequent visits where they shared meals and cherished memories. Initially hesitant about his new living situation, he eventually adapted thanks to the supportive staff at The Barclay.
In October 2025, Cerullo’s health deteriorated, leading to a hospital stay followed by rehabilitation. Despite the care he received, he entered hospice care before his passing. His family expressed gratitude to both the staff at The Barclay and Vitas Hospice for their compassionate support during his final days.
Memories of Cerullo include his fondness for Italian cookies, red grapes, and ginger ale, which he often enjoyed during family visits. His family wishes to honor his legacy, emphasizing his humility and kindness. As a testament to his character, they shared a quote from Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
Cerullo wished to be cremated, and plans are underway for a memorial service in Monterey, California, next year. This location holds special significance as it was a cherished place for him and his family during the late 1960s. His ashes will be spread in Monterey Bay, alongside those of his late wife, further symbolizing their enduring bond.
James William Cerullo’s life was one of service, family, and quiet strength. His legacy will live on through the memories he created and the values he imparted to those who were fortunate to know him.
