The Imperial County Public Health Department (ICPHD) initiated its 2025-2026 flu vaccination campaign with a dedicated clinic at Imperial Valley College on September 30, 2025. This proactive measure aims to provide free access to the seasonal flu vaccine for students, faculty, and staff, encouraging early vaccination as the winter months approach.
Dr. Stephen Munday, the County Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of timely vaccinations. “The Public Health Department strongly encourages all individuals who are eligible to get their flu vaccine early to help protect themselves and their loved ones,” he stated. The timing of the campaign aligns with the upcoming holiday season, a period noted for increased flu activity due to larger gatherings.
Flu Season Severity and Vulnerable Populations
The necessity for vaccination is underscored by recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reported that the 2024-2025 influenza season was the most severe since 2017-2018. This period saw heightened levels of outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and flu-related deaths. Health officials point out that influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can lead to symptoms such as fever, cough, severe fatigue, and muscle aches.
While anyone can contract the flu, certain groups are at a higher risk for severe complications, including adults aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions. Annual flu vaccinations are regarded as the most effective means of preventing the illness and mitigating its severity.
Vaccination Options for the Community
For those unable to attend the college clinic, the ICPHD offers flu vaccines for a nominal fee of $2 by appointment or on a walk-in basis during regular business hours, which are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00. The department is also planning additional community clinics at various locations throughout the county, with details forthcoming on the Public Health Department’s website and social media platforms.
Local residents can also access vaccinations at most doctors’ offices and pharmacies. Health officials recommend contacting providers directly to verify vaccine availability. In addition to flu vaccinations, the CDC advises staying current on vaccinations for other respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and RSV, for comprehensive protection.
