Bruce underwent a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) on February 27, 2026, at the TOC Spine and Joint Surgical Center in Tallahassee. This procedure was a long-awaited solution to the persistent pain he experienced during daily walks, particularly in his left knee. A former soccer player recognized for his speed on the Florida State University intercollegiate team, Bruce spent years coaching youth soccer, which took a toll on his knees.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Chesley Durgin, utilized advanced techniques, including a precision Mako Robotic Arm, to ensure the operation’s success. The couple arrived early in the morning, joining others seeking a new lease on life. The comprehensive pre-operative information provided by Team Durgin, including an 18-page booklet detailing expectations for the surgery and recovery, instilled confidence in Bruce and his family.
Following the outpatient procedure, Bruce surprised everyone by climbing the five steps to their home without assistance, despite initial concerns about mobility. A neighbor was on standby to help, but Bruce managed the stairs with ease. The next day, he began in-home physical therapy, receiving visits from three different therapists who offered varied approaches to his rehabilitation.
During the first week of recovery, Bruce faced some challenges, including nausea and hallucinations caused by pain medication. Thankfully, the support from triage nurses helped resolve these issues. By day four, Bruce recognized that his commitment to rehabilitation was crucial for maximizing the surgery’s benefits. He embraced physical therapy, working closely with his therapist, Kelsi, who balanced encouragement with necessary precautions.
By day seven post-surgery, Bruce was already exceeding expectations, achieving a knee joint range of motion of 115 degrees at his follow-up appointment. His physical therapist praised his motivation, referring to him as “rocking rehab.” This determination is vital for anyone undergoing knee surgery, emphasizing the importance of self-motivation in recovery.
Interestingly, Bruce’s post-operative appetite shifted towards healthier choices like fruits and vegetables. This change inadvertently influenced the dietary habits of his spouse, who noted improvements in her health following a similar eating pattern. At a routine check-up five days after Bruce’s surgery, her doctor remarked on the positive changes in her lab results, which she attributed to this unexpected dietary shift.
As they navigated the recovery process, the couple reflected on their family’s journey. They recalled a moment when their six-year-old granddaughter, Carter, visited, bringing a Band-Aid to place on her grandfather’s knee—a simple act that underscored the emotional support inherent in family ties.
The couple expressed gratitude for their access to healthcare, contrasting their experiences with those of individuals lacking insurance or adequate medical support. As National Physician Appreciation Week approaches from March 25 to 31, they encourage others to recognize and thank the healthcare professionals who play pivotal roles in their lives.
The Rev. Candace McKibben, an ordained minister and pastor of Tallahassee Fellowship, emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the contributions of physicians like Dr. Durgin and his team. While acknowledging the systemic issues within the healthcare sector, she remains thankful for the positive aspects of their personal healthcare experience and advocates for expressions of appreciation during this designated week.
