Head Spas Surge in Popularity as Wellness Trend Takes Hold

Head spas are rapidly gaining traction, particularly in Philadelphia, where they are becoming a go-to destination for wellness enthusiasts and beauty influencers. These establishments offer specialized scalp treatments that address common concerns such as oiliness and dandruff while promoting overall hair health. The trend is particularly popular among millennials and members of Generation Z, who are reportedly investing more in wellness services than older generations.

Sarang Head Spa, located near Norris Square in Philadelphia, exemplifies this growing movement. The spa’s owner, Sonia Yoon, emphasizes the importance of scalp care, explaining that clients often have extensive knowledge about hair but lack understanding of their scalp’s health. “There are some clients who are like, what is this concept of a head spa? What does it benefit? What is it good for?” Yoon noted. Her passion for scalp and hair health inspired her to open Sarang Head Spa in January 2023 after a career as a teacher.

Understanding the Head Spa Experience

At Sarang Head Spa, a soothing ambiance envelops clients, with relaxing music and soft lighting setting the mood for a rejuvenating experience. Guests can select from a menu of treatments tailored to their specific scalp needs. A typical session begins with a scalp analysis, using advanced technology to assess conditions and provide personalized recommendations. The cost for a 60-minute custom scalp facial is $150, comparable to similar services in the greater Philadelphia area.

During these sessions, clients receive a combination of massages, exfoliation, and cleansing treatments. Yoon utilizes a variety of products, including clinical-grade serums and shampoos, to address issues like dandruff, oiliness, and hair loss. The treatments may also involve steam applications and red light therapy, which are believed to promote hair growth.

Yoon takes her role as an educator seriously, guiding clients on how to maintain proper scalp care. She reiterates that the skin on the scalp is similar to facial skin, and using inappropriate products can lead to various issues. “So, learning those different things like to wash more frequently or to use the right products,” she said, emphasizing the importance of informed care.

Expert Opinions on Scalp Health

The rising interest in head spas aligns with growing awareness of scalp health within the medical community. Dr. Michele Farber, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Philadelphia, highlights that conditions affecting the scalp, such as dandruff and psoriasis, are prevalent. She points out that maintaining a clean scalp and incorporating massage can enhance circulation, potentially supporting hair growth.

Farber acknowledges that head spas can provide beneficial services, particularly for clients with dry or sensitive scalps. Nevertheless, she cautions individuals to seek medical advice for persistent issues that may require prescription treatments. Yoon echoes this sentiment, clarifying that her services are designed to complement, not replace, professional dermatological care. “I’m pretty honest with my clients. Nobody has said, ‘Sonia, I thought you would make me grow hair’ or ‘I thought you would get rid of my psoriasis,’” she said.

As the demand for scalp treatments continues to rise, Yoon’s Sarang Head Spa represents a significant shift in how individuals approach hair and scalp care. With social media platforms like TikTok showcasing these treatments, more people are discovering the benefits of head spas. Yoon expresses gratitude for the opportunity to educate clients, stating, “I’m grateful that I get to teach people in a different way.”

The increasing popularity of head spas reflects a broader trend in wellness, demonstrating a growing recognition of the importance of scalp health as part of overall well-being. The combination of luxurious treatment experiences and educational outreach positions establishments like Sarang Head Spa at the forefront of this emerging sector.
