Hardwell Shares Secrets to Sustaining Energy and Focus on Tour

Famed DJ and music producer Hardwell has been captivating audiences worldwide for over a decade, performing at 120 to 150 shows each year. Amid the whirlwind of touring, he emphasizes the importance of mental fitness and well-being as key components to sustaining creativity and energy on stage. In a recent conversation, Hardwell outlined how his approach to performance has evolved, highlighting the significance of recovery and intentional rest.

The demands of touring can be strenuous, both physically and mentally. Hardwell’s journey through the music industry has taught him that prioritizing wellness is essential for success. He reflects on his past mindset, which often involved sacrificing personal health for the sake of his career. “Experience taught me to treat wellness like part of the gig,” he noted. “Health and fitness play a big role in my life now.”

To maintain optimal performance, Hardwell has developed a series of pre- and post-show rituals. “Before each show, I use my pre-show time to meet fans and connect with media, but I also take time for myself afterward,” he explained. This includes relaxation techniques such as massages, downtime with his tour team, and working on new music.

Achieving a flow state, where focus and adrenaline intersect, is crucial for high performers. Hardwell recognizes that the right level of stress is necessary to unlock this state. “Too much stress can lead to burnout, and too little can result in underperformance,” he said. By managing his adrenaline levels through structured routines, he enhances his mental clarity for each performance.

Despite the glitz and glamour associated with being a touring DJ, Hardwell acknowledges the underlying challenges. “It’s not just about the crowds or the music; it’s a full mind and body experience,” he remarked. His commitment to physical fitness includes workouts in local gyms and incorporating breathwork, saunas, and cold plunges into his routine. “It’s like rebooting the entire body, especially after late shows,” he added.

Sleep, often overlooked by traveling performers, plays a pivotal role in Hardwell’s regimen. He has come to view sleep as the foundation of mental sharpness. “In my career, sleep is everything,” he stated. “I now plan buffer days between shows to catch up on rest or work on music without rushing.” This shift has led him to skip most afterparties, understanding that without adequate rest, the quality of his music suffers.

Hardwell’s connection to his purpose remains a vital aspect of his career. “What keeps me grounded is staying connected to why I do this,” he explained. While the fame and lights are alluring, he stresses that his true motivation lies in the music and the fans. Maintaining close relationships with family and friends helps him stay centered. “When I’m off stage, I’m just Robbert,” he said, revealing his commitment to enjoying life outside of music.

Reflecting on his career, Hardwell recalled taking a step back from touring in 2018 to focus on personal needs. “Taking that break was the best decision I ever made,” he shared. “It taught me that stepping away isn’t quitting, it’s healing. It made me a better artist, and I came back stronger because I finally put myself first.”

As he continues to thrive in the music industry, Hardwell’s story serves as a testament to the importance of balancing creativity and well-being. His journey illustrates that in order to sustain high performance, one must prioritize health and recovery, allowing for both personal growth and artistic development.
