The Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) has successfully achieved recertification of its respiratory services under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) program. This program is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and ensures that healthcare facilities meet stringent federal quality and safety standards. The reaccreditation confirms GMHA’s ongoing compliance with national regulations regarding respiratory and blood gas testing, which are critical for patient safety and care.
Importance of CLIA Certification
CLIA certification serves as a vital component of GMHA’s diagnostic capabilities. It guarantees accurate, reliable, and timely testing, directly influencing patient care and critical treatment decisions. “This is exactly the kind of progress we’re proud to build upon,” said Dr. Joleen M. Aguon, interim GMH Administrator and CEO. Dr. Aguon also serves as the hospital’s medical director of respiratory care and works alongside Dr. Caleb King, the laboratory director.
Respiratory and blood gas testing play a crucial role in diagnosing and managing various conditions, including chronic lung disease and respiratory failure. The importance of these services cannot be overstated, particularly in a healthcare setting where timely and precise diagnostics are essential.
Commitment to Quality Care
“This reaccreditation reflects the hard work and commitment of our respiratory and laboratory teams, who ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care every day,” stated Belle Rada, GMHA’s associate administrator of professional services. This recognition also highlights GMHA’s unique position as Guam’s only public hospital capable of providing comprehensive respiratory diagnostics to the community.
To obtain reaccreditation, GMHA underwent a thorough federal review process, demonstrating technical competency, quality control, and adherence to strict laboratory standards. “This certification is definitely an achievement,” remarked Daleina Alo, chief of GMH respiratory. “It’s a promise to our patients that we’re meeting and exceeding national standards for respiratory services.” Alo emphasized that the respiratory team is not only maintaining services but is also expanding its capacity to deliver trusted results that support quality-driven care.
CLIA certification is mandatory for all clinical laboratories conducting human testing in the United States and its territories. GMHA’s successful reaccreditation marks a significant milestone in its commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services.
