Gregory Allen Hoellwarth, a beloved figure known for his diverse interests and community involvement, passed away at the age of 67 in his home on May 24, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. His family and friends remember him for his quick wit, positive spirit, and a wide range of passions that included model railroading, frisbee golf, wine tasting, and raising puppies for service.
Born on July 5, 1957, in Solano County, California, Greg was the son of Beverly and Robert Hoellwarth MD. He grew up in the town of Vallejo and pursued a two-year degree in Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He later transitioned into a successful career as a computer programmer, working for the Mark Larwood Company in Sacramento and later for Quantum in Napa until his retirement in 2020.
Greg shared a deep passion for birding with his father, compiling an impressive lifetime list of bird species. He was also an avid road cycling enthusiast, participating in local cycling clubs and volunteering for road races. Each July, he could be found in his cycling gear, glued to the screen for the Tour de France. His love for cycling extended beyond personal enjoyment; it became a significant part of his identity.
Passion for Model Railroading and Canine Companions
Greg’s enthusiasm for model railroading was extensive. He participated actively in model railroading clubs, showcasing a remarkable knowledge of locomotives, rail cars, and historic trains. His travels with his wife, Gayle Keane, frequently included journeys on iconic rail lines, enriching his understanding and appreciation of rail history.
One of Greg’s most commendable contributions was his commitment to raising puppies for Canine Companions. Over a span of 25 years, he and Gayle were responsible for introducing more than 300 dogs into the organization’s service training program. This endeavor not only showcased Greg’s compassion but also had a lasting impact on the lives of many individuals in need of assistance animals.
Greg was also an active member of the Napa Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where he served on the board twice. Although he identified as an atheist, he enjoyed engaging discussions about spirituality and existence, reflecting his open-minded approach to life.
Legacy and Surviving Family
Greg is survived by his wife, Gayle Keane, his three siblings—Tina Korabiak, Carla Little, and Chris Hoellwarth—as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and his cherished Labrador Retrievers, Zambra and Etta.
In lieu of flowers, Greg requested that contributions be made to any professional organization that promotes and supports the free practice of truth in journalism. His legacy will be remembered for his vibrant spirit and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
